This 70-200mm VR II is sharper in the corners at 200mm than the old 70-200mm VR. This 70-200mm VR II is also slightly sharper than the previous gold standard, the 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-S (1999-2004), which fetched high used prices because it was slightly sharper than the previous 70-200mm f/2.8 VR (2003-2009).
Given the specifications, I doubt that this lens will match the 24-70 F4's IQ at any focal length, for starters the older lens takes larger filters (72 vs 67), suggesting at the very least, better corners at the wide end especially at large apertures. I see the 24-200 as an f/8+ lens.
I just bought the f2.8 70-200. I looked at the f4, but I wanted something I could shoot birds with. The f2.8, coupled the the TC-20iii ($465 from B&H) yields a really good (sharp, autofocus, fast) 400mm lens. Now, in actual tests, that combination at f5.6 is a bit soft at mid range (on par with a 70-300) and further. At f8, however, it is
There is a small difference in sharpness, barely discernible, at f2.8 - f4 at most focal lengths. Really, not a material difference. Anyone who says otherwise is just trying to sell more new lenses on behalf of Nikon. To me, the biggest improvements in the FL lens were in close up photography and it being a lighter lens.
The big question has been, does the new 70-200 f/2.8E FL ED VR live up to its $2800 price tag? 70-200, cameragear, lensprotogo, lensreview, NIKKOR, nikkorlens, nikon, nikonlens, review.
NIKON D3S + 24-120mm f/4 @ 120mm, ISO 1600, 1/125, f/5.6. Weight-wise, it is not a heavy lens when compared to the Nikon 28-300mm or 24-70mm lenses. Weighing about 670 grams, it is 230 grams lighter than the latter, which is a big difference. The lens feels very solid in hands and the zoom action is smooth and easy to rotate from 24 to 120mm
The Nikon Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S is the perfect case in point. As for the rest of the build quality features, the Nikon Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S has excellent weather and dust sealing, including a rubber seal along the lens mount. Nikon has been publishing x-ray style illustrations of the weather sealing for their recent Z lenses, including for the 14-24mm
It seriously would want to however the 70-200 is a pro f/2.8 lens being stopped down 3 whole stops to f/8 vs the 24-200 only being stopped down from f/6.3 to f/8. It's almost three times the price and also three times the weight. Nikon Z 24-200 @ 200. NIKON Z 7 + NIKKOR Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR @ 200 mm, 1/50 sec at f/8, ISO 64. Nikon F 28-300
